Chapter 4

LA-TOC IN 1961

Membership in the Theatre Organ Club of LA had reached 300 and in 1961 they presented Andy Crow, John Seng and Harry Q. Mills at the Whitney Studio 4/24 Morton Two local radio stations were broadcasting theatre organ programs: Les DuBay's "The Organ Loft" on KMLA (100.3) for an hour, every Sunday at 9 PM and "Pipes and Pedals" on Saturday from 5:30-6 PM on KCBH (98.7). Frank Woode first played the newly restored Style 216 WurliTzer in South Pasadena’s Rialto Theatre in concert on September 25th. And the truly MIGHTY outdoor Wurlitzer (a 4/17) in Gardena's Roosevelt Memorial Park was almost fully playable thanks to Mike Cahill's rebuilding efforts. Mike was also their Sunday afternoon artist. (The organ is still there but we understand it's again deteriorated to the point it's hardly playable.) Also in 1961 Ben Hall's monumental "The Best Remaining Seats" was first published in hardback with hundreds of photos and several color plates for the price of just $15. (The LATOS archives have a copy of the original edition.) Organist Ray Brubacher wrote "it is sure to remain the definitive work on the American Motion Picture Palace" and that statement holds true today 32 years later. The April '61 "Posthorn" first reports Don Wallace's efforts to locate a theatre with a restorable pipe organ in it so concerts could be presented in the theatre organs natural environment. After passing up many smaller instruments which required major work, Wallace ultimately entered into negotiations to rebuild the huge Kimball in the Wiltern - but we'll pick up that part of our story in a later chapter. Two well known artists playing weekly in the Southland were LATOS Honorary Lifetime Member Ann Leaf on a Hammond at the Pen and Quill in Manhattan Beach and John Duffy on a Gulbrantsen in Panorama City’s Red Barn Steak House. After several years of "passing the hat" to pay their, concert expenses (most artists donated their talent!) LA-TOC instituted a $1 per person charge at the door (and the family maximum was $2!)
