Chapter 5

THEATRE ORGAN IN LA

The year 1962 was filled with events both good and bad for, theatre organ buffs in LA and, indeed, throughout the world! One of the worlds leading organ buffs, Joe Kearns, passed away on February 17th. In 1955 he had installed Wurlitzer Opus 2022 (3/18) in his home just a block or, two from the corner of Hollywood and Vine. It had been the Warner, Brothers Studio organ and over, the years has been recorded many times, most notably by John Duffy, Lyn Larsen, George Wright and Helen Dell. Bob Carson acquired the residence following Kearns' death but ultimately moved out and the organ was sold. It was then installed and playing in the Renaissance Theatre in Mansfield, Ohio. The theatre organ world suffered an even greater, loss on May 29th when the legendary Jesse Crawford passed away of a heart attack at age 66. Also in 1962 LA-TOC member Douglas Brown offered a 4 manual WurliTzer, to the "...group which is in charge of the planned Los Angeles Music Center." His offer was rejected because no chamber, space had been planned for the new building - and so today our famous Music Center is without a "King of Instruments." On the brighter side, John Ledwon (later President of LATOS and even later of ATOS for three years) released his first album, "Organist at Play," recorded on his original residence organ, a 3/12 WurliTzer, in his Canoga Park home. In 1962 LATOS Honorary Lifetime Member Gaylord Carter was featured on KCOP in a half-hour TV show "Everybody Sing!" Monday nights at 8:30. It was broadcast live with a studio audience and featured nostalgic organ music, a community sing and short movie clips. Gaylord played a 3 manual Artisan (electronic) organ. Also in '62 Richard Vaughn sold the famous 5 manual Wurlitzer, (from Chicago's Paradise The4tre) on which George Wright recorded his famous Hi-Fi albums. The good news is it was sold to Bill Brown of Phoenix who has installed it in his home. Phoenix conventions always feature concerts on this magnificent instrument. During July '62 Los Angeles hosted its first national convention; however, we'll cover that story in a subsequent chapter.
